The Island

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

I noticed a little green island on the shore while shooting at Iluka so I focused my shots on it.

I’ve been shooting with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 which I got two days ago. It’s a fantastic tool for video and very capable for stills. Look forward to a post covering it in more detail soon!

Doggie in the Park

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

I took my dog for a long walk around Lake Joondalup.

It really frustrates me that he is extremely eager to go for a walk, every time I even make like leaving the house he gets excited that it’s walk time. Then once we’re out and walking, after about 5 minutes he’s keen to go back home and is quite difficult and disobedient.

Anyway, here’s a picture of him perched on a log:

M9 Memory Card Woes

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Today I noticed a problem others had told me about with their M9′s. The camera basically taking shots but not writing them to the card.

Luckily it was a rather lackluster sunset and I realised the problem as soon as it started occurring – I suppose chimping has one upside!

Here is an example of what is visible on the card:

And here’s the best shot of the evening:

JB Hi-Fi Dinner

I took some happy snaps at dinner with JB funtime friends.

Tiffen Ultra Contrast 3

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Ultra Contrast - Recognized by an Academy Award® for Technical Achievement, this filter series redistributes ambient light to capture details that would be lost in shadows. Lowers contrast evenly throughout image with no flare or halation. Available in several grades.

I bought one of these filters simply to see if they could provide more usable shadow information. It does seem that it stops clipping in at the dark end of the histogram, but due to the lower contrast these details are harder to see and pushing the contrast up to increase ‘pop’ clips a large portion of those details to black anyway. More testing is required. You can guess which shots are taken with the Ultra-Contrast 3, if there is no comparison shot assume it was taken with the filter.

Bad Batman!

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

A few shots from street shooting with Brad today and invading the crack den again. Oh and my Holga flash arrived promising lots of multicoloured fun, including pictures of my dad.

Candle

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

I slipped and cut my hand walking back from this spot. I also badly scratched one leg of my Gitzo tripod. When I was taking the shot my ND Grad filter slipped straight out of the holder and dropped onto the rocks earning itself a chip.

Sometimes it does feel like the world is against you :p

I also didn’t expect my Polariser to be so extreme, the inconsistent colour in the sky is disconcerting, I probably won’t use it again with such a wide lens.

UPDATE: Second shot added, here I tried to compensate for the uneven luminance in the sky.

Infinity

Here’s a shot taken next to an unnamed lake in Kingsley this evening.

If you see any posterisation, try opening it in google chrome or saving the image (right click -> save link as) and opening in photoshop.

Here's a laugh

10:32AM “You gotta see this in person. This is beyond the doubt, the most precise thing, and one of the most beautiful we’ve ever made. Glass on the front and back, and steel around the sides. It’s like a beautiful old Leica camera.”

Steve Jobs when describing the new iPhone 4G.

Having owned numerous ‘gadgets’, many containing both glass and steel, and having owned several Leica’s (all made of brass and magnesium alloy) I can honestly say that no mass-produced, Chinese made digital gadget will feel, look or operate like a Leica. What Steve is trying to do here is class his product with something that has integrity and impeccable build quality. Nice try Steve, but those who know Leica well, will scoff at your comparison, and everyone who doesn’t know Leica couldn’t give a shit.

Hyde Park

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Here’s a panorama I shot of Hyde Park in Mt Lawley today, a nice contrast to the dilapidated squatter den I shot later in the afternoon (see previous post).

It’s not showing up properly (you cant scroll to the far left) when you click on the image, so right click on it and select open link in new window.
